I have been in a steady crush with jazz the last several years, and now with retirement, I am starting to dig deeper into some areas of this great all American music's history, in addition to the bop, be-bop, cool and hard bop styles that are my favorites.

I have a Vallankumous Kulttuuriin - Pelle Miljoona & 1980 - Vallankumous Kulttuuriin album from Duke Ellington that features some of his earliest works, and a fine CD all of them CD's, actually that featured Lonnie Johnson and Eddie Lang, two of jazz' greatest early guitarists. While ".

Volume I. With his unbelievably mellow tone from his cornet, this Iowa boy was a genius of what would become swing in later years, and his style even today is anything but stale or dated, as is the music from this stellar set, that also includes on several cuts the great guitar work of Eddie Lang.

It is a testament to the beauty and catchy music here that it survives today, having been carefully and very successfully remastered for a sound that would have only been surpassed in those days by seeing Beiderbecke in his various combos live.

A few cuts are still somewhat primitive, but when the original sound source was 78 rpm vinyl, the engineers had Symphony X - Symphony X take what was available, and luckily, those records were remarkably in good shape, with plenty of bass, a distinct layering of sound, and separation that despite its being a mono recording allows all the players to shine. For those interested in the musical bridge between the original jazz days of Jelly Roll Morton, Louis Armstrong or Sidney Bechet, this is along with Ellington, the finest jazz of the time.

It is a tragedy that Beiderbecke would succumb to his horrific alcohol consumption at only 28 years of age. He did not read music, which makes his cornet playing and a solo piece on piano that much more impressive. It's also sad that Eddie Lang would also die at an early age as a result of a botched tonsillectomy a few years later. But their music is alive and well, still vibrant, and a delight to add to my collection. Truly good music is timeless and when one considers these songs were recorded live, it's all that much more stunning in terms of musicianship and tone.

It's a great collection, and deserves to be heard by all jazz fans. My teenage music passion was Sweet Bitterness (Shake Rmx) - AirNaN - Summer Vibes jazz, and one LP I absolutely wore out playing it on a portable player with the type of needle that looked like a sharpened pencil lead was the George Avakian production The Bix Beiderbecke Story Volume 2: Bix and Tram.

I still have it, but trying to listen to it is painful, given the pops and skips Half Machine Lip Moves - Chrome - Half Machine Lip Moves accumulated during those thousands of playbacks.

I serendipitously discovered the availability of this album on CD, and when it came it was a moving experience to hear "Singin' the Blues" in all its remastered beauty. Recorded between February and September ofthis album offers a good overview of the Bix and Tram recordings, some of the best of Twenties jazz, from small ensemble "dixieland" jazz to some of the larger orchestral arrangements for час / one hour - esokhôra - à la volée when the guys put on their tuxedos and played posh places.

The best of this album are the aforementioned "Singin' the Blues," with perhaps Bix's most famous solo, each note perfect and achingly beautiful, "I'm Coming Virginia," "Ostrick Walk," "Clarinet Marmalade," and "Riverboat Shuffle" which feature this group of virtuosos at the top of their form.

These guys were cool before the word was invented. Louis Armstrong said about Bix, "Those pretty notes went right through me. They still do. Wonderful and essential. Bix's rendition of "In A Mist" gives me goosebumps. This is a very good quality recording, with lots of clarity and detail, in my opinion. The only thing I would have preferred would be if there were more solos by Bix B. However, the music is terrific. There is also currently a band called Americana Classic Jazz Orchestra in the Twin Cities Minnesota that plays this kind of music very well.
