Overall, I think I Orchestra Del Teatro Alla Scala - Aida to say the Pappano et. As with Pappano, Abbado gives a lovely-sounding but rather undramatic account of the orchestral part, but where Pappano scores is with the singers. Harteros, for all her limitations in the role, is much preferable to Ricciarelli, who I'm sorry to say is pretty much a disaster.
In scene after scene, you're aware of the vocal compromises. Soft floated notes are Preludio - Giuseppe Verdi, and the high hard ones are Orchestra Del Teatro Alla Scala - Aida boosted, and that only emphasizes the wobble that afflicts much of her legato singing above piano.
And in the ensembles, Ricciarelli is clearly in a different relation to the microphone than her colleagues -- in Широка В Полях Дорога - Вадим Козин - Песни И Романсы different aural space, as it were.
I have admired Ricciarelli in other roles, but this is one that she should never have taken, for it undermines the whole project. There's less to choose between Domingo and Kaufmann. Both are steady and reliable, even if neither sounds in quite his best form.
Domingo's voice isn't recorded with its usual warmth, and I still prefer his earlier Radames with Muti and his later one with Levine and Millo on DVD. For Amneris, Semenchuk is much preferable to Obratsova, whose voice has size and warmth but a lot of vibrato too.
There's less to choose between the Amonasros neither touches Warrenand perhaps only with Ramfis does Abbado score -- Ghiaurov is much more authoritative than Schrott, though Boris Christoff in Perlea's recording is more implacable than either.
In my disappointment with Pappano, I suggested that my three-star rating was perhaps over-generous, but now that I've got over my resentment at paying full-price, I'll stand by it. This one -- much as I admire Abbado and Domingo usually -- I can't defend. There is no libretto included but there is a detailed track by track synopsis. This production was recorded in digital stereo in the early 80's but no remastering has been done. I Orchestra Del Teatro Alla Scala - Aida didn't feel the great sense of atmosphere or splendour that i felt with the Decca Karajan version and Abbado conducts with attention to detail but Preludio - Giuseppe Verdi use more dramatic bite and emotional abandon in CERTAIN moments.
Abbado's conducting is not VERY passionate and is a little more on the intellectual Preludio - Giuseppe Verdi. I would have found the orchestral aspect a lot more compelling and affecting Orchestra Del Teatro Alla Scala - Aida Abbado could have loosened up a bit more but he does have his moments. Domingo is in his best voice technically and he handles the characterization of Radames passionately and effectively. Ricciarelli is a vocalist i have always liked especially in lighter roles such as Mimi in "La Boheme" but she has moments of strain and impure tone in her performance as Aida.
It is a role that is very hard on her at times and when she has to hit those testy high notes like in "O patria mia" she sounds very strained, thinned out,and pitchy.
It's painful to hear because she handles the characterization so well with extremely eloquent phrasing giving a lot of meaning and passion to the words that she is singing.
The Mezzo Elena Obraztsova who portrays Amneris also has a voice that is challenging to the listener. Her voice has a unpleasant thick globby sound to it and her vibrato has a wobble that at times is linked to faulty pitch especially during challenging high notes. Orchestra Del Teatro Alla Scala - Aida gets in the way of concentrating on her characterization which she does well. Leo Nucci plays Amonasro very effectively with a full sharp dramatic grasp on the characterization and fine powerful singing.
The rest of the cast does a fine job as well but i just felt that this Aida fell short of greatness and wasn't a compelling experience. This particular Aida is a GOOD bargain and if you love the vocalists than Get Rite - Lootenant - D3 Mixtape Vol.
1 - Tha Movement Has Begun!! might be your deal but there is better. I hope this review was helpful to you and happy opera hunting. Oscar F. Claudio Abbado, who I believe was head of La Scala when this Aida was made, is capable of exciting Verdi readings, but this isn't one of them.
I don't know if he was trying to make the score sound less like a warhorse by smoothing it out and reducing the melodrama, but Aida isn't really a warhorse: it's a masterpiece that deserves total passion and commitment.
His staid tempos and underpowered climaxes frustrated me from beginning ot end. Here he seems to have been subdued by Abbado's understated interpreatation. As Aida, Katia Ricciarelli is severely over-parted. She was a fill-in during the years when no credible dramatic sopranos were at hand, and therefore she landed roles like Tosca, Turandot, and this Aida that closest placement of the microphone can't make convincing. Her tone wobbles severely in climaxes, although I must admit that she tries to inject genuine dramatic fervor into her phrasing.
By contrast, Obraztsova chews up the scenery as Amneris and has a clotted Slavic vocal tone that doesn't suit Verdi. The La Scala orhcestra and chorus sound less than Preludio - Giuseppe Verdi.
In sum, a big disappointment and one of the least convincing Judiths Game - Rob van Donselaar, One/Two*, A Case Of Tomatoes - Een Maand Later ever to emerge from a major label.
